New figures show men paid thousands more than women in Cornwall

New figures show men are paid thousands of pounds more than women in Cornwall, on average. Data looking at full-time wages across the UK has revealed some startling insights into the finances of residents in our fair county.

The average salary of full-time workers in Cornwall is £31,737, which is £3,226 less than the national median of £34,963. This is much lower than some areas, including London (£44,370) and Three Rivers in Hertfordshire (£46,232), but higher than areas such as Oadby and Wigston in Leicestershire (£24,337).




But shockingly, the average annual salary for men is £33,141 compared to £28,105 for women – a staggering £5,036 difference. See figures for other areas of the UK on our interactive map below.

Last year, average annual full-time pay rose by 5.8% to £34,963, while average weekly pay rose by 6.2% to £681. Wages are much higher in some parts of the country than others, with the average annual salary being higher in Scotland (£35,518) than in England (£35,106), Northern Ireland (£32,879) or the Country Wales (£32,371).

Among English regions, there is a distinct north-south gap, with workers in London earning the biggest annual pay packet (£44,370), followed by the South East (£34,963) and the East of England (£34,833). The lowest wages are in the North East (£31,200), followed by the East Midlands (£31,634) and then Yorkshire and the Humber (£31,920).

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) data comes from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings, based on a sample of 1% of full-time jobs taken from HM Revenue and Customs’ Pay As You Earn (PAYE) records.
