Soccer-Wigan’s Hughes scores late, late winner to make EFL history

(Reuters) – England Under-20 international Charlie Hughes gave new meaning to the phrase “late winner” when he scored after 20 minutes of second-half stoppage time to give Wigan Athletic a 1-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers in the third round of England. Tuesday.

The unusually long stoppage time at the end of the League One match came due to an injury to referee Adam Herczeg after a fall early in the second half.

Fourth official Steven Rushton replaced Herczeg on the pitch but the restart was delayed while a search was carried out in the DW Stadium crowd for a qualified fourth official.

Both sides missed chances to take the lead after the restart but, seconds from a goalless draw, a Callum McManaman cross found Hughes’ center half in the box.

The England Under-20 international grabbed the ball on the volley to score the latest goal in a game in the long history of the English Football League (EFL) to win the match.

The win moved Wigan into the top half of the League One table, occupying 11th place with 34 points. Wycombe are 17th on 30 points, four above the relegation zone.

Portsmouth are leading with 56 points.
