Huddersfield Town have swooped in for the transfer as the striker joins their League One rivals

Huddersfield Town transfer target Alfie May has completed his move to League One promotion rivals Birmingham City.

The Blues have confirmed that last season’s top scorer in League One has joined them on a three-year deal from Charlton Athletic, with numerous outlets claiming that Town have been beaten to the mark by fellow relegated side.

Football Insider reported at the end of last week that the Terriers had a £750,000 offer for the striker accepted by the Addicks, before the same website claimed that Birmingham had ‘hijacked’ Town’s deal with a £775,000 offer .

Town’s rivals have secured a striker who has scored 27 goals in all competitions for the Addicks in the last term, while the 31-year-old has netted at least 20 times in each of the last three League One campaigns.

“It’s a good project to be involved in,” May told his new club’s website. “Speaking to the manager (Chris Davies) and Craig (Gardner, technical director), the journey they want to go on as a club – the club shouldn’t be in League One.

“These are interesting times. I want to hit the ground running, move on and hopefully get promoted.”

In the Addicks club statement confirming May’s departure, the forward added: “It’s a difficult one for me because I’m leaving my hometown, but it’s football and I’m doing it for my family.
