Water tanks on airplanes are frequently not cleaned properly, which can lead to contamination. Studies and reports have shown that these tanks can be a breeding ground for harmful bacteria and pathogens.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found that a considerable number of aircraft have tested positive for coliform bacteria and, in some cases, even E. coli, Birmingham Live reports.

These bacteria can lead to severe gastrointestinal problems and other infections.

In addition, coffee and tea served during flights are usually made using the plane’s tap water. This means that any contaminants present in the water tanks can also be found in these hot drinks.
