Danny Rohl can say goodbye to a Sheffield Wednesday player after a grim update

This Sheffield Wednesday player looks to be all but gone following a new contract update.

Sheffield Wednesday have already said goodbye to some of their first team players from last season.

Cameron Dawson, Reece James, Tyreeq Bakinson, Juan Delgado, Ciaran Brennan, Will Vaulks and Lee Gregory have all left and joined new clubs on free transfers.

Softening the blow of these departures, while seemingly improving the Sheffield Wednesday squad, is the continued influx of arrivals in S6.

Sheffield Wednesday announced the signing of Olaf Kobacki on Wednesday morning; he joins Ben Hamer, Max Lowe, Yan Valery, Svante Ingelsson and Jamal Lowe in signings for the Owls so far this summer.

There is also news that Josh Windass has signed a new contract with Sheffield Wednesday after weeks of uncertainty over his future.

But the case may be different for Di’Shon Bernard, who is now technically a free agent.

Di’Shon Bernard’s latest signing at Sheffield Wednesday

Bernard, 23, became a free agent on July 1 after his one-year contract at Sheffield Wednesday expired.

The Jamaican international was handed a new deal in S6 after an impressive debut season at Hillsborough, with Bernard making 32 league appearances and becoming a much-loved player among the fans.

Bernard is believed to have had Championship and European suitors in his sights since the end of last season, but is yet to decide for or against staying at Sheffield Wednesday.

However, Windass has signed a new deal and with new players continually coming in, there is a sense that Bernard is gone; if not, then he’s seriously weighing his future in the S6.

Asked for an update on the matter, journalist Joe Crann said news of a potential renewal for Bernard was quiet.

Danny Rohl must now plan Di’Shon Bernard’s exit at Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday have made some very interesting signings so far this summer. But the Owls are yet to sign a new centre-back.

With Bernard gone, a new centre-back will certainly be needed and Rohl will want someone with the same athleticism and all-round ability as Bernard, and someone in the same age bracket as well.

Replacing him will be difficult. It may not be a job for the free agent market, and whether or not the Owls have enough money left over after signing Valery and Kobacki to then sign a top-tier center back remains to be seen.

There is still the loan market which Sheffield Wednesday are likely to tap into later in the summer when Premier League clubs have completed their own deal.

But with Michael Ihiekwe and Bambo Diaby, the only natural centre-backs, Dominic Iorfa and Akin Famewo can also play in that position, adding another player or two at centre-back is crucial for Sheffield Wednesday.
