The position Leeds United’s recruitment team looked at ‘extensively’ behind the scenes this summer

Joe Rodon officially became Leeds United’s first summer signing on Tuesday, but there is still a long way to go.

After such a brilliant campaign on loan at Elland Road last season, Tottenham centre-back Rodon was Leeds’ main target in the early stages of the window.

And in a deal that saw Archie Gray go the other way for £40m, Leeds were able to agree a deal for the Welshman to return on a four-year deal for £10m.

Rodon’s arrival is an early statement of intent from Leeds, but it’s imperative they don’t stop there, with several areas of the squad still in need of strengthening.

Leeds have just two recognized defenders in the squad, are now a low midfielder and are almost certain to lose two more centre-backs, with Liam Cooper out of contract and Charlie Cresswell likely to leave despite the collapse of his move to Toulouse.

The position Leeds have looked at “extensively” behind the scenes

You could really make a case for every position on the pitch needing additions, though it’s hard to see that happening.

Illan Meslier has been linked with a move to Marseille and so a new number one would be needed. Leeds have no back-up for Junior Firpo or Sam Byram, both of whom are also injury-prone.

As mentioned, Leeds look set to lose two centre-backs, while Gray’s departure leaves them with a lightweight midfielder. The end of Jaidon Anthony’s loan also means Daniel Farke has one less wide man to choose from.

Although Brenden Aaronson returns, another number 10 wouldn’t go amiss, and an upgrade to Patrick Bamford as Leeds’ starting striker is long overdue.

That said, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, there is one position that Leeds’ recruitment team have looked at “extensively” behind the scenes so far this summer, and that is winger.

Whether Leeds move for any of those players they have looked at will depend on the futures of Crysencio Summerville and Willy Gnonto, who have both been linked with exits.

Given how significant the loss of one or both of the two could be, it’s no wonder they’ve done a thorough search for potential replacements.

If they weren’t properly replaced, Leeds would leave much weaker than last season.

What players have Leeds been linked with so far?

There have been a few names mentioned as potential targets for Leeds, the most prominent being FC Basel’s Liam Millar.

Millar was on loan at Preston North End last season and Leeds scouted him at the Copa America, where he represents Jesse Marsch’s Canada.

FC Excelsior’s Couhaib Driouech has also been linked, although up to 10 teams are said to be in line for his signature.

Not so many interiors, but free agent duo Callum O’Hare and Bobby De Cordova-Reid would be another two on the list.
