Image revealed of suspected WWII shell that sparked bomb squad action

Police have released an image of the suspected Second World War shell which led to the closure of a main road in Warwickshire. She was found in a field near a house on the A45 London Road yesterday afternoon, July 2.

Police set up a 100-metre cordon around the area, with several neighboring properties being evacuated. They closed the stretch of main road for almost three hours.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists were called to the scene. They confirmed it was not an explosive device. But they detonated the device as a precaution.

Warwickshire Police shared the image of the device before it was destroyed in a Facebook post. In the post, the force thanked people for their patience following the road closure.

It read: “This was the object which led to the closure of the A45 near Stretton-on-Dunsmore yesterday. It was initially thought to be a WWII mortar shell, so as a precaution we put a cordon around it.

“Explosives experts attended and determined it was not an explosive so the cordon was lifted. Thank you for your patience while we dealt with this incident, we hope you will appreciate that we cannot take any chances with incidents like this.”
