Ryanair baggage warning for passengers flying from eight UK airports

Ryanair has issued an advisory to passengers flying from eight UK airports, including Birmingham, Manchester and London Stansted. Tourists wishing to book excess baggage will have to follow a different procedure than other airports.

Ryanair currently only allows its passengers to bring one small personal bag on board as standard. It must not measure more than 40x20x25 cm and must fit under an airplane seat.



Customers can pay to add a larger carry-on bag, measuring 55x40x20cm and weighing up to 10kg, to their booking or upgrade to a checked bag of up to 20kg. Tourists who require additional baggage can also pay for excess baggage and add up to 3 kg to each 20 kg bag for an additional fee.

This can usually be done online when checking in for your flight, however the rules are different for passengers flying from certain UK airports. Ryanair has published guidance on its website for people departing from Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Newcastle and London Stansted Airport.

The advice is also relevant for tourists flying from Milan Bergamo, Bologna, Dublin, Krakow and Naples. The airline said: “You can increase your baggage allowance by 20kg when you check-in for your flight online. Passengers can add up to 3kg of excess baggage to each 20kg check-in bag for a fee when checking in online, up to two. hours before departure.


“Excess baggage options are not available to purchase online for flights departing from certain airports including but not limited to Milan Bergamo, Birmingham, Bologna, Bristol, Cardiff, Dublin, Edinburgh, Krakow, Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Naples, Newcastle, London Stansted. If you are departing from any of these airports and need to purchase excess baggage, you can do so at the airport’s check-in desk.”

The cost of purchasing excess baggage with Ryanair is £9 per additional kilogram when purchased online or £11 per additional kilogram when booked at the airport. Ryanair is known to measure or weigh bags at the baggage desk and at the gate to ensure that passengers comply with the baggage limits shown on their booking. Passengers carrying oversized hand luggage may be charged £46 at the gate.
