Here’s the Liverpool FC news roundup for Wednesday, July 3, 2024. The Reds get a boost at the Olympics as Cody Gakpo shines in Germany.

Cody Gakpo is thriving

Liverpool striker Cody Gakpo is the toast of the Netherlands this morning after a five-star performance to fire the Oranje into the last 16 of Euro 2024 against Romania on Tuesday.

Gakpo, 25, opened the scoring with a brilliant first-half goal, coming in from his station on the left and firing a ball inside the near post.

The former PSV captain added a second-half assist, dribbling brilliantly into Romania’s penalty area before finding Donyell Malen, who slotted home from close range.

A huge Olympic boost

Liverpool and Arne Slot received a big boost this week with reports that two players will remain with the Reds for the start of the season.

The Athletic report that Liverpool will not be without either Mohamed Salah or Wataru Endo for the Olympics this pre-season. The pair were both in the running for call-ups in Egypt and Japan respectively.

The competition is not organized by FIFA, meaning there is no obligation for clubs to release players. Salah and Endo will now miss the contest “following discussions”, meaning they will be fully available for pre-season and the start of the Premier League.
