Video footage showed the ceiling of the Old Trafford dressing room leaking after heavy rain hit Manchester on Sunday night.

Towards the end of Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to title-chasing Arsenal, a storm swept through the 114-year-old stadium.

Water could be seen cascading from one corner of the ground, while videos on social media showed a flood pouring under the seats.

Videos on social media also show that the rain has even reached Arsenal’s dressing room, with footage showing heavy leaks from the roof.

Fortunately, Mikel Arteta’s men had already secured a big win and the roof leak would not have dampened their joy.

United said 1.6 inches of rain fell in the two hours after the final whistle – more than in the whole of May last year – but supporters of both clubs left the stadium safely.

The deluge coincided with the visit of Labor Party leader and Arsenal fan Sir Keir Starmer as a guest of Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who met Lord Coe and United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe beforehand to discuss about the future of Old Trafford. .

Coe is the head of the taskforce leading plans to regenerate the stadium and surrounding areas.

United back Ratcliffe’s vision to bulldoze Old Trafford and build a ‘Wembley of the North’ at a cost of up to £2bn, but will consider refurbishing the existing stadium if it is not feasible.

Ratcliffe has pledged £237m to upgrade Old Trafford as part of his £1.3bn investment in United, but Sunday’s flood was a reminder that much more will be needed to cover the gaps.

Fans were forced to leave affected areas quickly as thunderstorms broke out towards the end of their 1-0 defeat by Arsenal.

On the pitch, it was United’s 14th defeat of a dismal Premier League campaign that currently sees them in eighth place.

Leandro Trossard’s 20th-minute strike proved to be the difference as the Red Devils’ European hopes faded.

Ten Hag’s side will look to get back to winning ways when they return to Old Trafford on Wednesday to face Newcastle.
