Sheffield man shot in leg in Merseyside attack

Police they arrested two men from Sheffield after a man was shot in the leg.

Merseyside Police were called to the scene on Lucerne Road in Wallasey just before 11.20pm on Saturday night (June 30) after receiving reports that a man had been shot in the leg.

A 33-year-old man from Sheffield he was taken to hospital where he is being treated for a leg injury after two people in a car spotted him on the road and called 999.

A stolen and burnt-out Nissan Navara was found by police on Clayton Lane, near Poulton Victoria Football Club, which is less than a mile from where the shots were fired.

Police confirmed that two men from Sheffield they were arrested. A 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply.

A 35-year-old man who was arrested near Wallasey Tunnel, was arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A drugs and possession of an imitation firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence.

Crime scene investigators remain at the scene for forensics and house-to-house inquiries are ongoing in the local area. Detectives will also review CCTV footage to establish the circumstances surrounding the shootings. As reported Liverpool Echo the street remains blocked by the police.

Detective Chief Inspector Mike Dalton said: “Enquiries are in the very early stages and we are working hard to establish the circumstances leading up to the shooting and the motive behind it.

“We believe two men from the Sheffield area met a group of three or four men on Lucerne Road and shortly after the meeting a firearm was discharged resulting in the shooting of a 33-year-old man years from Sheffield.

“It is understood the victim made his way onto Wheatland Lane. Two people in the car, who were driving on the road, saw the victim on the road and stopped to assist and call the emergency services.

“The man was then taken to hospital where he is being treated for a non-life threatening leg injury. I am appealing to anyone who may have seen or heard anything before or during the incident to come forward with information. could be crucial to our investigation.

“Around 11.30pm, a stolen Nissan Navara was found burnt out on Clayton Lane, near Poulton Victoria Football Club, which is less than a mile from where the incident happened. We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the car being left on fire or who saw it in the area to contact us as any information they may have could be vital to our investigation. I would urge anyone driving in the area at the time who may have dashcam footage to contact us.

“At this stage of our investigations, the motive of the attack and the identity of the victim are unknown. Merseyside Police will not tolerate the use of firearms on our streets and we are relentless in “searching our streets for those involved in gun crime to ensure they can be brought to justice”.
