Common reason cars fail ITP which can be avoided by spending £1

A mechanic has highlighted the most common reason for MOT failures, which can be avoided for just £1. Iain Ferguson, motoring and repair expert at Glasgow Kelvin College, urged drivers to check their vehicle lights regularly to avoid MOT failure.

He advised: “Faulty lamps are a common fault during MOTs. During brighter nights, drivers often fail to check their lights properly and just assume they are all working as they should. Checking your lights regularly, even in those summer months, can make all the difference when your MOT comes around.”

“Replace any bulb that is not working with an appropriate type.”

Ferguson also stressed the importance of making sure the headlights are aligned correctly. According to Kwik Fit, this involves locating the headlight adjustment screws and using a screwdriver to adjust them until they are at the correct level.

The car’s manual will usually indicate where these screws can be found, Birmingham Live reports.

For most vehicles, accessing the screws requires removing the trim around the headlight, which is usually found in the headlight housing. If the lights are faulty, replacement bulbs are available online or from most auto parts stores, often costing less than £1.
