A new tool has been launched to make Cornwall Council’s website more accessible to users

A new accessibility and language tool has been added to Cornwall Council’s website to make it easier to use.

Called Recite Me, the tool offers a range of accessibility and language options to ensure website visitors can access online content and services without barriers, in a way that best suits their needs.

Recite Me’s assistive toolbar includes screen reader functionality, multiple reading aids, customizable style options, and an on-demand live translation feature that boasts over 100 languages, including 65 text-to-speech options and style.

Cornwall Council Chief Operating Officer Tracie Langley said: “Being able to provide an inclusive experience is essential to support the over 20% of the population who may experience barriers due to disability, learning difficulties, visual impairment or whether they speak English . a second language.

“A key part of our strategy as a council is to provide excellent value for money and consistently good service for our customers. We are committed to ensuring that all customers can access information and services in a way that best meets their individual needs, and this tool means even more people will be able to do so.”

Recite Me founder and CEO Ross Linnett said: “It’s important to deliver an inclusive online experience where everyone can use our digital world in a way that best suits their needs.

“As more organizations provide online accessibility tools, those who face online barriers can access information and services seamlessly. The digital world must be accessible to everyone.”

Tracie Langley added: “While we have not been able to find a translation service that provides information in Cornish, our Cornish team is developing a Cornish translation tool to provide this option for our residents.”

When accessing the Cornwall Council website, customers will need to select the ‘Listen and Translate’ option at the top right of the screen. The Recite Me toolbar will then appear and people can select the language or accessibility tool that helps them access the information they need in a way that suits them.
