George Boateng’s ‘incredible opportunity’ after returning to ‘first love’ in English football

New Coventry City manager George Boateng has spoken of his honor at returning to his ‘first love’ in English football.

The 48-year-old former Netherlands international midfielder signed for the Sky Blues from Feyenoord for just £220,000 in 1998, going on to really launch his Premier League career.

Quickly establishing himself as a firm favorite with the fans at Highfield Road, the all-action centre-half helped the burgeoning attacking partnership of Darren Huckerby and Dion Dublin under Gordon Strachan to 11th place and set the mid table in its prime. months.

He earned legendary status and is still fondly remembered by Sky Blues fans after helping to break one of Coventry’s long-running hoods with a win at Villa Park. Boateng scored twice in a 4-1 win over Aston Villa at Villa Park in February 1999, ending City’s 63-year wait for a league win at the ground.

However, his performance that day brought him to the attention of Villa, who replaced him the following summer, paying £4.5m for his services and breaking the hearts of City supporters.

But after just 57 appearances and seven goals, Boateng has made his mark in his glorious 18 months at the club.

Returning this week to be first-team coach under Mark Robins, who also appointed Wolves boss Rhys Carr behind him, which saw the shock departure of assistant manager Adi Viveash, Boateng took to social media to say: ” I am delighted to announce my return to my first love in English football, Coventry City FC!

“From 1998 to 2024, it’s an honor to come back and work alongside Mark Robins and the entire staff. I want to express my gratitude to Coventry City FC for this incredible opportunity.”
