Live updates of the 2024 general election as voters go to the polls in Birmingham and the West Midlands

Polling stations in Birmingham and the West Midlands region are now open for the 2024 general election. Voters will head to the polls throughout today, July 4, to elect a new MP for their constituency.

Polling stations opened at 7am and will close at 10pm. Votes will be counted until the early hours of tomorrow, when the country will find out who will be the next prime minister.




Voters must bring a photo ID with them when voting. In total, there are 650 constituencies in the UK where voters can elect an MP.

Birmingham and the Black Country has over 20 venues. This year’s election is being held using new constituency boundaries following a review by the boundary commissions of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland in 2023.

Can I still vote if my ID has expired?

Yes – you can still use the ID even if it has an expired date. But the photo on your ID, for example a passport, it must look like you to be accepted.

Do I need ID to vote?

Yes, you will need ID to vote. Residents will need to take a photo ID with them to the polling stations.

Valid forms of ID accepted include: passports, ddriving licences, bus passes for elderly or disabled people and Oyster 60+ cards.

What time are the polling stations open today?

Polling stations opened at 7am (July 4). They will remain open until 10pm tonight.

Residents can vote anytime between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.
