Leeds United man ‘played like a madman’ in six relegation points but sacked second manager of season

DARMSTADT, GERMANY – AUGUST 26: Brenden Aaronson of Union leaves after a red card during the Bundesliga match between SV Darmstadt 98 and 1. FC Union Berlin at Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor on August 26, 2023 in Darmstadt, Germany. (Photo by Jörg Halisch/Getty Images)

Leeds United midfielder Brenden Aaronson made a strong cameo off the bench for Union Berlin but could not muster enough to help his side beat relegation rivals at home to VfL Bochum.

As Leeds look to clinch promotion through the play-offs this season, their Championship success has come alongside most loanees not having great individual seasons.

Brenden Aaronson was keen to bounce back when Leeds were relegated but has failed to find a consistent return to form since joining Bundesliga side Union Berlin.

Union Berlin lose a vital relegation clash with Bochum but Aaronson impresses

The latest poor result for Aaronson’s Union side came at the weekend at home to fellow relegation battlers VfL Bochum, a 4-3 defeat that plunges his side further into the mire.

Aaronson started on the bench and was brought on at half-time with the Union 3-0 down, but he helped them mount a comeback with eager pressing – a key feature of his form at Leeds.

The Union made it 4-2 before Bochum restored their two-goal lead with 20 minutes remaining – but the USMNT man was in no mood to lie down, battling his way into the box to put the ball on the plate for Benedict Hollerbach .

As the match ended in a narrow defeat that leaves the Union one point above the relegation play-off places with just two games to play, Aaronson received strong praise from German publication Berliner Zeitung:

“The England loanee played like mad after his substitution, was a constant source of uneasiness and presented some difficulties to the Bochum defence. Strong, while preparing the Hollerbach gate in a very limited space.”

Would you get any of the loan players back?

Aaronson’s Union Berlin sacks another manager

Urs Fischer was sacked from his role at the start of the season after overseeing the club’s remarkable rise from the lower levels to the Champions League this season.

His replacement, Nenad Bjelica, has now been confirmed to be sacked by the club after just 161 days in charge, leaving Marco Grote to oversee the side for the final two games of the campaign, where they face Cologne, the second lower, and Freiburg. :

Aaronson can’t catch a break at all

It’s clear that we spent ridiculously to sign Aaronson for £25m, but he’s working hard to get things right for his current club.

His form has returned in 2024, but his club’s slide in recent months has been worrying and could easily end in relegation.

If that happens, two relegations on his CV since he left Salzburg is something that makes us look even worse with this deal.
