Farke left fuming after Leeds denied the goal

Daniel Farke was left fuming after Leeds United had a goal disallowed in their play-off semi-final first leg at Norwich on Sunday.

The match at Carrow Road eventually ended 0-0, with both teams failing to seriously trouble the opposition goalkeeper, the teams combining for just 0.8 xG (expected goals).

It leaves the tie well poised ahead of Thursday’s second leg at Elland Road, but despite his side heading back home clean and level, Farke was left frustrated by a first-half incident which saw him Junior Firpo placed on home ground. ball into the net following a mix-up between Shane Duffy and Angus Gunn, only for the offside flag to be raised.

Farke believes the goal should have stood and bemoans the decisions that have gone against his side this season, telling reporters: “I can only recommend everyone to look at the scouting stream, it’s not offside.

“I’m annoyed. I have to make sure I’m not too angry. It’s the little details that make the difference, if you go in front it changes the picture. At the end of the day, everyone is talking about Wembley, £100m. At this level, all decisions must be correct.

“Maybe (the referee) got a bit scared that the whole stadium is moaning if he doesn’t give offside. No, you give the striker the benefit of the doubt. It’s definitely not offside.

“If you want to be responsible for a game like that, you have to be up to it. I have 12 letters of apology already this season. We have to make sure we find a way even if this crucial decision went against us.”

Despite his anger at the disallowed goal, Farke was pleased with his side’s display as they bounced back from a challenging end to the regular season with a clean sheet.

“When you play a two-legged play-off semi-final, an away draw and a free leg on a difficult pitch is always a good, solid result,” continued Farke.

“The last few games of the regular season were not great, we conceded too many goals and especially away from home. We wanted to be solid against the ball today.

“Overall I have to say I’m pretty happy. We’ve got a massive game on Thursday night. It’s just the break.”

Although David Wagner’s Norwich side now face the daunting task of a trip to Elland Road, the Canaries boss feels his players are capable of overcoming the raucous home atmosphere to reach the final at Wembley.

Wagner is also looking to build on his experiences during his time at Huddersfield, where his Terriers side beat Sheffield Wednesday on penalties at Hillsborough before winning another half at Wembley against Reading to secure promotion to the Premier League League.

“Every second we’re in the game at Elland Road is a minute in our favour,” Wagner told his post-match press conference.

“We said before that we are the underdogs. Expectations are from Leeds. We know that.

“I experienced being the visiting team in the play-offs”.

Norwich captain Kenny McLean echoed his manager’s belief that the Canaries can go on to win at Elland Road, telling Sky Sports: “We know how good Leeds can be at home and they’ll fancy their chances, but we’re a very good team because well.”
