Former Hull FC, Bradford Bulls and Wakefield Trinity head coach Brian Smith could be set to take on a huge job eight years after his last Super League role.

The 70-year-old’s spell in Super League spanned nearly 30 years, starting with Hull FC in 1988 and culminating in his stint at Wakefield, which ended in 2016.

Although he has never won a trophy in the UK, he has reached a grand final and a Challenge Cup final at the moment here.

With over 601 top-level games coached in Australia, he is one of the most experienced of all time, with only two head coaches taking more games in NRL history.

He is also the brother of Tony Smith, who recently left Hull FC, and the father of Rohan Smith, who just lost his role with Leeds Rhinos.

Now, after a long time out of the head coaching game, he may be poised for a shock return.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that he had joined the mix to become the new head coach of the Parramatta Eels.

It would mark a return to a club he previously managed for a decade, taking 243 games for the Eels.

That puts him ahead of Josh Hannay, Jason Ryles, Trent Barrett and Dean Young in major competition to succeed Brad Arthur after he stepped down from the role in May after serving as head coach himself for Eels for over a decade.

He will be hoping to finally win his first Premiership if he gets the job after four Grand Final defeats in Australia.

His 2001 grand final with Parramatta was the club’s first for 25 years.

The Eels are currently level on points with bottom-of-the-table Wests Tigers after just four wins all season and have former Wigan Warriors star Trent Barrett as caretaker manager.
