Enzo Maresca says he should have signed Leicester City midfielder instead of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

Enzo Maresca has been told he should have targeted one of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s team-mates following the latest transfer between Leicester City and Chelsea.

The Foxes have been subject to heavy raids from Stamford Bridge bosses since confirming promotion back to the Premier League. Although it served as a major financial boost for the club, the departures of Maresca and his coaching staff, followed by Dewsbury-Hall in a £30m deal on Tuesday, leave questions to be answered at the playing side going forward from the start of the season.

On the other side of the negotiating table, pundits will question whether this was a smart move on Chelsea’s part as well. Already possessing a wealth of midfield talent, journalist Gab Marcotti weighed in on whether the 25-year-old was indeed the right one to be targeted by Maresca’s former side Leicester.

“I mean Maresca must like him,” he began telling ESPN FC. “It’s not an enormous amount of money to spend. Sure, why not?”

Dewsbury-Hall enjoyed their best form under Maresca, scoring 12 goals and providing 14 assists in 44 league games. But instead, Marcotti believes Harry Winks is a better fit for the Italian system and should therefore have been the one to make the move.

“I would have thought, if you’re going to replicate (the same tactics), then Harry Winks would have been the guy they sign – or someone who can do Harry Winks-type things. I’m not comfortable with Enzo (Fernandez) in the playmaker role I don’t think that’s his position and obviously Dewsbury-Hall doesn’t do that and neither does (Conor) Gallagher.
