‘Fantastic’ Leeds player rejects Elland Road contract and undergoes medical to new club on Wednesday

Leeds United lose another Thorp Arch academy product following Archie Gray’s move to Tottenham Hotspur after a medical at a Championship rival was cleared on Wednesday.

Gray, 18, moved to Tottenham from Leeds on Tuesday in a deal which sees the Whites receive £40million, but a quarter of that fee is spent on Joe Rodon, with the Welshman returning permanently to the delight of fans.

Many have left the club, but Leeds are yet to communicate what is happening with Jamie Shackleton, Liam Cooper and Cody Drameh. The retained list has confirmed that Leeds have offered all three players news offers.

But on Sunday, their contracts expired and they technically became free agents. Shackleton struggled for game time last season despite Ross McCormack describing the versatile ace as “fantastic” and being a big fan of him.

Farke even hinted at a new deal for Shackleton at the start of the season, but now he is heading to a league rival:

Sheffield United are closing in on a deal for the Leeds international

Reports emerged this week that Sheffield United are closing in on a deal for Shackleton, and now there’s an update from Graham Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post who says Shackleton has rejected Leeds.

Smyth reports that the midfielder underwent a medical at Chris Wilder’s side on Wednesday and is now set to sign permanently on a free transfer for the Blades, who are likely to pose a promotion threat.

Shackleton will return to Elland Road on October 19 before a return fixture at Bramall Lane on February 22. It looks like Shackleton is set to be announced as a Blades player sooner rather than later.

The right move for Shackleton at this stage in his career

Farke is an admirer of Shackleton and is the perfect type of player to have on the bench. Whether it’s because of his versatility, his natural form or his attitude despite being a fringe player at Elland Road.

Now 24, Shackleton has more than a handful of games to play. He is at the stage of his career where he needs to be first choice and a move to Sheffield United could allow him to do that.
