Leeds-born star lined up for million per season transfer

Leeds-born NRL half-back Sam Walker is set to make a huge move to one of the league’s most high-profile moves.

The 22-year-old as born in Leeds as his father, Ben Walker, was playing for Leeds Rhinos at the time.

Ben Walker made 28 appearances for the Rhinos, also as a half-back, and scored 12 tries.

His uncle, Ben Walker, was a Queensland State of Origin representative and also had brief Super League experience, playing for Catalans Dragons in 2010.

Walker, however, returned to Australia in 2003 as his father left Leeds to join the Manly Sea Eagles.

After starting out with Brisbane Broncos, he joined Sydney Roosters in 2019 and has become a key member of their side since being named the 2021 Dally M Rookie of the Year.

In 2022, he kicked a remarkable 12 goals from 12 attempts in a huge win over Wests Tigers, in a season he finished as the Roosters’ top points-scorer.

This year, he has been almost ever-present for the Roosters, but may be about to move elsewhere.

Fox Sports have reported that he may be set to return to where he started, with the Brisbane Broncos considering an attempt to sign him.

However, they’ll receive competition from the Roosters, who would like him to stay at the club – but haven’t managed to tie him down to an extended contract yet.

One of the leaders in the NRL for both points and try assists, he has been key to the Roosters’ recent improved fortunes, seeing them make it into the top four of the table.

He may well be the replacement for the Broncos’ current half-back Adam Reynolds, who will retire at the end of next year – while he is also seen by many as the next to play in the halves for Queensland, following in the footsteps of his relatives.

As Walker is only contracted with the Roosters through 2025, he is free to talk to other clubs from November of this year.

They may be in a good spot to retain him though, as although he’d reportedly be on a deal of around $1 million, the Roosters have lost big names such as Joseph Manu, Luke Keary and Joseph Sua’ali’i – and Jared Warea-Hargreaves to Hull KR – so they’ll have money to spend.
