LIVE: Junction 29 and junction 30 of the M62 were delayed as the motorway was closed eastbound after a man fell from a bridge

A man “fell” off a bridge on the M62 near Lofthouse and armed police rushed to the scene to help.

All vehicles were stopped on the M62 in both directions after J29 to Lofthouse for almost four hours. All lanes have since reopened.




Travel data analysts Inrix said: “Slow traffic due to earlier police incident on the M62 East from J29 M1 J42 (Lofthouse) to J30 A642 (Rothwell). The highway was closed for approximately three hours and thirty minutes.”

The service added in a separate update that there was also a “medical emergency” on the roundabout, with traffic stopped at 1.20pm. Since then, the roundabout has also been reopened.

Tragedy as man ‘falls off bridge’ on M62 as armed police rush to scene

West Yorkshire Police said:

At 9.35am today (Thursday), police received a report of a safety concern about a man on a bridge over the M62 between junctions 29 and 30.

Another call was then received to inform him that the man had fallen on the road.

The ambulance service was contacted and armed officers were prepared to attend the scene in a medical capacity.

The man was taken to hospital for further treatment. His injuries are described as life-threatening.

Investigations were ongoing at the scene. Anyone who saw what happened or has information is asked to contact Leeds District CID on 101 quoting police log 0405 of July 4.

Diversion route in place

The M62 in West Yorkshire is closed eastbound between J29 (Lofthouse Interchange / M1) and J30 (Rothwell) due to a police-led incident.

Emergency services, including West Yorkshire Police, are in attendance. National highways traffic officers are also on site helping to manage traffic.

National Highways has shared the following diversion route:

  • From the M62 J29/M1 J42 take the M1 northbound
  • Exit the M1 at J44 and at the junction take the feeder road to the fourth exit for the A639
  • Take the A639 towards Oulton
  • At the Oulton Hall roundabout take the second exit to stay on the A639
  • At the next roundabout (Rothwell) take the second exit onto the A642
  • Follow the A642 south to the Rothwell Interchange with the M62 (J30)
  • Take the first exit from the roundabout to join the M62 eastbound

Report that a person fell from the bridge

The ongoing “police incident” which is causing long delays on the M62 is understood to be due to a man falling from a bridge.

The M62 has been closed between J29 at Lofthouse and J30 at Rothwell due to an ongoing “police incident”.

Traffic stopped due to ‘police incident’

The circumstances of the police incident are currently unknown and it is not clear when the road will be reopened. Yorkshire Live contacted West Yorkshire Policefor more information.
