Concert organizer innovates green travel in Leicester

Music fans heading to Leicester this weekend for Kasabian’s return to Victoria Park could face a bumpy journey due to ongoing road closures and construction.

To ease some of these travel issues, concert promoter Live Nation is partnering with Big Green Coach, the event’s official travel partner, to offer one-day carbon-free round-trip coach travel from 15 cities.

Up to 3,000 additional parking spaces have been set up for ticket holders and can be pre-booked online, located within walking distance of Victoria Park and located outside the city centre.

The city council will extend existing residents’ parking schemes in Clarendon Park and introduce temporary schemes in streets near London Road and Stoneygate to prevent unauthorized parking near Victoria Park.

With around 60% of ticket holders living locally, people are encouraged to travel sustainably to the concert.

The city’s free Hop electric bus service will have an extended schedule on Saturday (July 6), with a temporary stop on Tigers Way for concert-goers.

Hop buses will run every 10 minutes until 23:30. A free secure bike park will also be available near the park’s main entrance for those who choose to cycle.

Leicester City Council’s Motorways Network Manager, Rupert Bedder, said: “As with previous successful events at Victoria Park, we have worked closely with the organizers to ensure they have a comprehensive travel plan for the event which will encourage ticket holders to travel sustainably and contribute to the minimization. any impact on the inhabitants.

“Things will be busier than normal on the day of the event, but we are confident that the extra measures put in place by organizers will meet the demands of festival goers and ensure the rest of the city remains open for business. .

“Look out for real-time parking information being displayed on the approach roads to the city center which will help people find an available space. And for concertgoers, our advice is to plan your journey to and from the event to avoid delays or disappointment.”

Road closures will be in place on Saturday 6 July to ensure the smooth running of the event, which will include Regent Road (between Granville Road and Salisbury Road) being closed from 6am until midnight.

Regent Road (between Tigers Way and University Road) will be one way eastbound only from 6am until midnight and Granville Road will be closed from 6am until midnight.

London Road (between Mayfield Road and Waterloo Way) will be closed from 9pm until midnight and Victoria Park Road (between St Marys Road and St Leonards Road) will be closed from 9pm until midnight the night.

Finally, University Road will be one way southbound only from 6am to midnight.

A pick-up point for pre-booked cars and taxis will operate from Morrisons car park on nearby Counting House Road and will be signposted from the venue.
