General election voters ‘returned’ to the polling station because of the ID ‘rule’

Voters for the general election were turned away from the polls today due to identity issues. Twitter/X users took to social media as they tried to get to the polls and vote as the Conservative Party and Labor Party battle it out on Thursday (July 4).

One Twitter user fumed: “So the Tories are introducing ID to vote and including an Oyster card for over 60s! Veterans can’t use their veteran card, but seniors can use a travel card! Blatant vote rigging attempts right there with their older voter demographic #Election2024”.

“This Lambeth resident is unable to vote in the election due to lack of photo ID. Our volunteers are witnessing people all over the country being turned away from voting because they don’t have a photo ID or because it’s not the exact same name or ‘doesn’t’ look like them”. People should know about this today!” said another.

Another said: “A polling card should be enough as it has been posted to your address. Banks and finance companies accept official invoices and council tax returns as proof of identity”. Another typed: “I applaud your efforts but even that won’t quantify the people who just can’t deal with ID sorting and never make it to the Polling Station. Usually vulnerable people, without support, struggle with their problems. voter ID, please get out and vote for them.”

“Emergency proxy voting was badly promoted (first-hand experience)! Most local election offices can and will help with this. We had a quick chat earlier, but requests for emergency power of attorney MUST be made by 5pm!” wrote another.

“I just wish I could be allowed to vote in the GE as an EU citizen paying tax in the UK for 10+ years, not just local elections…” wrote another. “A team, you say? Maybe hire a proofreader. It’s the difference between no and being in the know,” said another.

Another said: “How long has voter ID been in effect now. Used in recent locals. It’s free, so no excuses. If it’s good enough for the rest of the world, it’s good enough for the UK.” And another said: “You should know how to spell first before you start your teenage bedroom campaign! Clowns”.
