Leeds Rhinos-bound Justin Holbrook is officially getting a new job

Despite being linked with the Leeds Rhinos head coaching vacancy by Jon Wilkin earlier this week, former St Helens boss Justin Holbrook has found himself a new job.

Holbrook has stepped down as head coach of Papua New Guinea to take over as Mal Meninga’s assistant with the Australian national team, a move that is expected to see Leigh Leopards head coach Adrian Lam leave the Australian set-up. .

Of course, it is still possible that Holbrook will take on the Leeds Rhinos head coaching role, with a host of international coaches also having dedicated duties at the club, with Holbrook himself being the Sydney Roosters assistant, while Adrian Lam has shared the duties with the Leigh.

Holbrook’s appointment to the Kangaroos set-up is a major turnaround from the coaching staff that lost to New Zealand 30-0 in the Pacific Championships at the end of 2023, while leaving Pacific Bowl champions Papua New Guinea without their head coach .

The former St Helens boss only took up the role with the Kumuls in 2023, winning two of the three matches he coached after their shock sacking by the Gold Coast Titans.

Confirming his resignation from PNG to take up a role with his native Australia, Holbrook explained his decision and thanked the Papua New Guinea RFL for the opportunity in a statement shared by the IRL.

He said, “I resigned as the head coach of the Kumuls with mixed emotions. I really enjoyed coaching the team and winning the Pacific Bowl Championship last year in PNG.

“Witnessing the passion for rugby league from all the players, staff and everyone in their country was incredible.

“I have taken up an Australian assistant coach role for the Pacific Championships under Mal Meninga for this year’s series against New Zealand and Tonga.

“I want to thank the PNGRFL for the opportunity to be the head coach. It was an experience I enjoyed. PNG people have been so welcoming of me to their country. The love they have for their team and opposing teams shows how much Rugby League means to the people of PNG.”

Dates for the Pacific Championships have yet to be publicly announced but they take place in the off-season, meaning Holbrook could be available to Leeds Rhinos for the remainder of the season if they wish to pursue him.

Holbrook has been linked with the Leeds Rhinos vacancy by former St Helens captain Jon Wilkin, who told The Rugby League verdict on Sky Sports News that he believed his former manager would be “an amazing appointment for Leeds Rhinos”.

Wilkin said: “I’ll tell you this now, a fine coach, like one of the best and I actually think it would be an amazing appointment for Leeds Rhinos if they got him. They could do whatever they wanted to do. “

Holbrook also appeared on Seriously about rugby league list of five external candidates for the Leeds Rhinos job after the buzz surrounding Brad Arthur and Paul Rowley died down.
