Three free agents Wigan Athletic should target including Dan Potts

Wigan Athletic are looking to enjoy a fruitful summer transfer window as they look to climb further up the League One table.

Wigan Athletic have high hopes for next season after recovering well from a points deduction last time out.

Latics have made real strides forward under Shaun Maloney, who has taken over his first full season in charge of the club. With the help of some strong summer signings, the club could be in and around the promotion picture in the 2024/25 campaign.

Four new signings have already gone through the door. Dion Rankine and Andy Lonergan are on permanent deals, while Calvin Ramsay and Michael Olakigbe have arrived on loan.

Free transfer offers will be a smart way for Maloney to strengthen his positions at Wigan Athletic. Here, we suggest three free agent bargains Latics should be keeping an eye on this summer…

Tyreece John-Jules

Striker John-Jules has had a rocky senior career but there is no doubt that he is a player with exciting potential. As a free agent following his release from Arsenal, there will be EFL clubs eyeing his situation.

The 23-year-old has plenty of experience in Ligue 1, having spent much of the last few seasons on loan, scoring 10 goals and providing four assists at this level. If he can stay fit and get fit, John-Jules could become a real asset.

On a free transfer, perhaps on a short-term deal, John-Jules could be a good option for Wigan Athletic to add to their depleted attacking force.

Dan Potts

Left-handed centre-back Potts will be a smart signing for someone this summer. His vast experience and leadership could make him a key figure in League One, although he could easily have Championship options as well.

The 30-year-old moved from Luton Town and with Wigan Athletic sure to be in the market for options at the back, Potts would be a smart signing.

He can also operate as a left-back, giving Maloney valuable versatility at the back. Potts has proven his ability at both League One and Championship level so could be a plus for the Latics.

Who is this?

THE QUIZ STARTS!

Nesta Guinness-Walker

Last but not least, another left-back will surely be on the shopping list at the DW Stadium.

There are some good free agents in that role, but Guinness-Walker might be the smartest signing. The 24-year-old became a key player at AFC Wimbledon before leaving for Reading, who gave him his first shot at the Championship.

He is moving on after spending the second half of last season with Stevenage and should certainly find another club at this level. Guinness-Walker can play as a full-back or left-back and his athleticism and attacking intent could be a positive influence at Wigan Athletic.
