Aldi’s £8 ‘delicious’ wine that will transport you to the Greek island straight from your garden

A top UK wine expert has shared Aldi’s best selections of lesser-known blends and styles, including one that promises to ‘transport’ you to the Greek islands. The budget supermarket teamed up with Sam Caporn of the Institute of Masters of Wine, who revealed some summer drinks that should be on your radar if you’re a wine lover.

With prices starting from just £5.99, wine fans can venture into the ‘under the radar, unique and indigenous’ side of wine, which will be rewarded with delicious drinks that don’t compromise on quality or value. She picked six wines to watch out for, including Athlon Assyrtiko.

She recommends looking away from popular sauvignon blanc and pinot grigio blends in favor of a rueda verdejo or pinet picpoul. Sam said: “This summer, step away from your typical white wines and opt for something a little different, such as a refreshing Picpoul de Pinet or fruity Luberon Blanc.

“Summer means tasty, easy-drinking wines, and these whites certainly deliver. Sourced from European hotspots such as Santorini and the south of France, these authentic gems bring a bit of Mediterranean sunshine to your glass of wine and create a holiday feel from home – even when it’s raining.”

Aldi is selling a bottle of Athlon Assyrtiko for just £8.49, a white wine that will add a buzz to your mouth with a fresh flavour, making you feel like you’re on holiday in Santorini without leaving your house. Sam said: “Santorini is considered the spiritual home of the Assyrtiko grape, so allow yourself to be transported to the beautiful Greek island with this fresh and elegant wine.

“With flavors of lemon, apricot kernel and lime, it is the ideal accompaniment to seafood, grilled fish, baked scallops and fresh house salad.”

Sam’s other top picks include £5.99 Baron Amarillo Rueda Verdejo , which she described as a must for sauvignon blanc lovers. The expert said: “From the Castilla y Léon region, this juicy yet balanced wine offers beautiful notes of linden, green apple, nectarine and quince, with a hint of melon. Pair with seafood tapas, paella or a tomato salad – muy buena.”

Or for fans of pinot grigio or pinot gris, opt for Specially selected Picpoul De Pinet (£7.49, 75cl) , aromatic with notes of ripe apple, plum and nectarine. Sam said: “This is a refreshing and crisp summer drink from the Languedoc region. Offering an attractive straw color with hints of ripe apple, plum and nectarine. A classic match for oysters, fish, seafood spaghetti and calamari.”
