Sheffield United in competition for key transfer target –

Preston North End made a late swoop to steal Peterborough United star Harrison Burrows away from Sheffield United, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 22-year-old is set to leave the Weston Homes Stadium this summer after starring for Darren Ferguson’s side in recent years. The move to Bramall Lane has long been on the cards, with a fee in excess of £2m already agreed. However, despite reports that personal conditions have been breached and a medical has been approved, the transfer has yet to be announced.

Burrows would represent pure profit for Posh after coming through their academy. He captained the side in the second half of last season, where he also scored a stunning brace to secure a 2-1 win over Wycombe Wanderers in the EFL Trophy final at Wembley Stadium in April.

Peterborough’s failure to secure promotion from League One meant it was always going to be a battle to keep hold of the versatile youngster. They fell at the play-off semi-final stage for the second consecutive year, this time bowing out to eventual winners Oxford United.

Sheffield United are keen to add players to their squad who they feel will be able to cement their place in the Championship while pushing for a return to the Premier League. Burrows is seen as someone who will be able to ply his trade at the top level for years to come, but the Blades’ takeover woes have halted any immediate transfer plans.

As such, Preston is now looking to take advantage of the situation. It is claimed the Lilywhites have made a bid for the defender to hijack the 11th hour move.

The Lancashire outfit finished 10th in the Championship last season, 10 points off the play-off places. They hope they can upset the apple cart next season by slipping into the top six. However, they are yet to make any signings so far this summer and have also had to deal with the loss of club captain Alan Browne.

The writer’s vision

It’s no surprise to see clubs trying to capitalize on Sheffield United’s woes. Burrows is highly regarded by a number of clubs and Preston are unlikely to be the only ones watching. Making a late move could bring others into the fray, but a lot depends on the player himself.

Having already agreed terms with the Blades, he can hope to secure a move to a team that could threaten the top flight of the Championship. Of course, they face a points deduction next season, but they have just been relegated from the Premier League and will be expected to make up the deficit. However, Preston have been a team that have consistently threatened to push into the play-offs over the last decade and they will feel that a handful of quality additions could finally see them get over the line. You can’t blame them for trying their luck.
