Sarah Sackman called the Labor Party “a beacon of hope” as she took the Finchley and Golders Green constituency from the Tories.

The human rights lawyer beat Tory candidate Alex Deane by more than 4,000 votes, as she overturned the 6,562 majority won by former Tory MP Mike Freer in 2019.

In his victory speech, the new MP said: “The country has called for change and we, as the Labor Party, have a duty to deliver,” adding “The people have given us a mandate and a responsibility to build a different society.” .

She pledged to help build: “A society where nurses are not required to visit food banks; where women and girls are not afraid to go home at night; where we act when we see the planet on fire and where we welcome rather than demonize those, like my ancestors, who come to this country fleeing persecution.”

Referring to the experiences of her predecessor, who chose not to contest the election following death threats and an arson attack on his office, she said: “We may have had differences on policy, but we should have opportunity to face each other at the ballot box.”

She added: “I pay tribute to many years of service to the work in Finchley and Golders Green.”

Referring to her party’s failure to tackle anti-Semitism under previous leadership, she said: “Against a backdrop of populism and Brexit, the Labor Party has lost its way. In particular, he disappointed the Jewish community. The Labor Party needed to change and under Keir Starmer it has.”

She added: “I am delighted that a changed Labor Party can once again be a beacon of hope for people from all the communities that make up this special place.”
