Finchley and Golders Green 2024 general election results as Labor wins seat from Tories

Labour’s Sarah Sackman has been announced as the next MP for Finchley and Golders Green. The constituency’s new MP defeated Alex Deane, their Tory rival, at the polls during the general election by more than 21,000 votes to 17,276.

Finchley and Golders Green has an electorate of 77,500 and votes from 47 polling stations were counted at the RAF Museum in Colindale overnight (Thursday 4 July and Friday 5 July). In 2019, Mike Freer, who did not stand this time, won the seat for the Tories with a majority of 6,562.

He obtained 24,162 votes, i.e. a share of 43.8%. The Liberal Democrats came second with 31.9%. Labor received 24.2 percent.

Asked how residents’ lives would materially improve with her as MP for the seat, Ms Sackman told MyLondon she had “a hell of a job to do”. She added that Labor would aim to be “practical”, promising “more bobbies on the beat and more GP appointments”.

Ms Sackman also said business rates reform, planning reform economic “stability” will mean people feel better about themselves economically. MyLondon understands the Tories in Barnet are glad the party has not suffered an “absolute wipeout” nationally and believe more than 100 seats is something they can build on.

At the national level, Labor is on the verge of a landslide, according to the exit poll projection, with 410 seats. The Conservatives are poised to win 131 seats.

The exit poll also predicts the Liberal Democrats with 61 seats, Reform UK with 13 and the Green Party with two. In Scotland, the SNP is expected to secure 10 seats with Plaid Cymru in Wales on four.

Sir Keir Starmer said the country was “ready for change” in his victory speech as his party appeared on course for a landslide victory in the general election. The Labor leader, who looks set to become Britain’s next prime minister, added: “You voted, now it’s time to deliver.”

An exit poll indicated that Labor will have a majority of 170 seats in the Commons, with the Conservatives reduced to the lowest number of MPs on record.

In his acceptance speech after being re-elected in Holborn and St Pancras, Mr Keir said: “Tonight, people here and across the country have spoken and are saying they are ready for change.

“To end the politics of performance and return to politics as a public service.” He added: “You voted, now it’s time for us to deliver.”
