Chaos at Leeds Bradford Airport as runway closes with flights diverted due to ’emergency’

LEEDS Bradford Airport is in chaos after the runway was closed for emergency repairs, with flights diverted.

Some arriving and departing flights were canceled or diverted until at least 19:00 tonight, but their check-in has now reopened.

In its latest update, Leeds Bradford Airport said: “Check-in has now reopened.

“We expect the runway to reopen at 7pm.

“Some flights are cancelled, delayed or diverted, our website and airport information screens have the most up-to-date information.”

The airport previously apologized for the disruption in a statement and said “minor repairs” to the runway surface needed to be carried out immediately.

The airport said in a post on X: “The runway is currently closed for emergency runway repairs.

“We expect to open no earlier than 7pm today. Please contact your airline for further travel advice.”

In a later post, they advised a customer to: “Please contact the airline for travel advice. Our teams are working tirelessly to make repairs and return to normal operations.”

Flights arriving from all over Europe have been diverted to East Midlands, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester. and Newcastle airports.

Meanwhile, state flights at departure boards have been canceled or more information will be provided at 4.30pm.

Three departures have been cancelled, spoiling the weekend and holiday plans of flyers going to Paris, Corfu and Belfast.

Jet2 advised a customer on social media that its teams are working to assist affected customers.

One leaflet read: “Poor Jet2 staff at Leeds Bradford have no idea what is going on. The airport’s own website says the airport was closed until 7 p.m., but the departure hall staff were not told anything.”

Another flyer said: “Leeds Bradford Airport runway closed nothing in or out. Not a single representative can be seen.”

Yesterday, a flight had to abandon a landing after strong winds hit the airport The Yorkshire Evening Post reported.

Video showed the flight struggling to deal with gusts as it made landfall before abandoning the attempt.
