Owen Beck Birmingham’s transfer is closing in as several other English clubs are chasing the Celtic target

Birmingham have made an approach for possible Celtic target Owen Beck Football Scotland understand.

The 21-year-old left-back has returned to Liverpool after enjoying a season-long loan spell with Dundee. He did so well for Tony Docherty’s surprise first six-pack that Brendan Rodgers was interested in replacing him in January, but one appearance for the Reds in his short spell with them ruled that out. It meant that only then could he play for his parent club or Dee, and a loan extension was soon announced.

And now, it looks like there will be a scramble to sign the Welshman on loan for the upcoming campaign, with several English sides in the hunt. The Blues, now in League One and managed by former Celtic boss Chris Davies, are the first to make a move, but several Championship sides also have Beck on their radar.

The talented youngster will leave with the Liverpool first team for pre-season training in the United States. Then a decision will be made about his immediate future.

Rodgers will continue to look for a player in that position, with Greg Taylor the only senior player in the squad, no one adding at the end in January and Alexandro Bernabei leaving on loan. But Football Scotland believes Beck made their short list.

He was one of the Premiership signings of the season and immediately hit the pitch in dark blue and earned call-ups for the Wales squad. He went on to score twice and assist four times for Docherty’s men at left-back. A groin injury kept him out towards the end of the season.
