What should the new Labor government do first after winning the 2024 general election?

Keir Starmer’s Labor Party won a resounding victory in the 2024 general election – but they will face a daunting tray of problems when they start their time in government, from the NHS and the economy to immigration and a creaking prison system .

We want you to tell us what their top priority should be and how they should go about it – and you can tell us in our comments section below.

Labor largely lived up to expectations in a devastating night for the Tories, winning more than 400 constituencies and reclaiming the seats of Tory heavyweights such as former prime minister Liz Truss, Penny Mordaunt and Jacob Rees-Mogg. The Conservatives have beaten the worst poll predictions and will be in opposition under the next government.

Britain’s Reform Party will end the 4-seat contest with a good showing in England under Nigel Farage. The Green Party is likely to increase its seats to 4, while five independent candidates, including longtime Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn, will join the next Parliament.

Locally, Labor has strengthened its grip on all three Coventry seats. You can find the full local results in our live blog here.

In his election victory speech in London, Starmer said people would wake up to the news of a Labor victory and Conservative defeat “relieved that a weight has been lifted, a burden finally removed”. Acting Prime Minister Rishi Sunak acknowledged the race saying: “The British people have given a serious verdict tonight. There is much to learn and reflect on, and I take responsibility for the loss.”

Labor said in its manifesto that the first steps would be to secure economic stability, tackle NHS waiting times and launch a “Border Security Command” department to tackle criminal gangs and tackle illegal small boat immigration.

Elsewhere, they say publicly-owned utility Great British Energy will cut bills, recruit 6,500 new teachers and crack down on anti-social behaviour.
