07/06/2024

The Eagles defeated the Halifax Panthers for the second time this season after an impressive 28-0 win at Olympic Legacy Park on Friday night.

The win sees us second in the Betfred Championship table with four points.

Mark Aston named four changes to his starting thirteen ahead of Friday’s game as Tyler Dickinson, Titus Gwaze, Conner Bower and Bayley Liu returned to the squad.

After a slow start from both sides it was Sheffield who broke the deadlock just over a quarter of the time when Cory Aston’s cross at the last tackle found the hands of Kris Welham in the right hand corner. he executed a quick offload to Ben Jones-Bishop and with no one around him, ran over the try line for the first points of the game.

Aston’s conversion effort was on target and to perfection, meaning the hosts took a 6-0 lead.

Sheffield ensured they went into the sheds at the break in double figures as Aston’s corner kick in the last fell to Matty Dawson-Jones before putting the ball back into play where Liu was the first to reacted to pounce on the loose ball and score for the Eagles.

Dawson-Jones opened the second half with a lovely swan in the corner after good hands in the Eagles pack to clear the ball down the left side. Aston’s effort was again successful, taking the game to 16-0.

Following a red card for Halifax’s Zack McComb just before the hour, Sheffield extended their lead with two tries in quick succession.

The first try came when Matty Marsh played a quick offload just over 10m from the tryline to Jones-Bishop who managed to put the ball in the corner under pressure from a pack of Halifax defenders before Eddie Battye to catch a short. -ball from Gwaze to put the ball under the sticks for an easy score.

Aston added a late penalty from the front as the hooter sounded, ensuring the Eagles secured a fourth consecutive league win in the Betfred Championship and secured a 28-0 win for the boys in red and gold.
