Soldier dies during training exercise on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire

A soldier has died during a military training exercise in Wiltshire, the army has announced.

The 23-year-old was part of a crew driving an armored vehicle at the Salisbury Plain training area at the time of Friday’s incident, police said.

Local news website Wiltshire Today said a tank overturned in the incident near the village of Enford, Wiltshire.

Emergency services were reported to have been called to a public road about 10 miles south of Devizes just before midday on Friday.

Wiltshire Police said an investigation was launched involving the force, the Health and Safety Executive and the army.

An army spokesman said: “We are sad to confirm the death of a soldier at the Salisbury Plain training area.

“Wiltshire Police are investigating and it would therefore be inappropriate to comment further.”

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “We are investigating the circumstances following the death of a 23-year-old soldier at midday on October 15.

“He was part of a crew operating an armored vehicle and was participating in a military exercise at the Salisbury Plain training area near the village of Enford.

“Our thoughts are with the soldier’s family and friends at this difficult time and we would ask that their privacy be respected.”
