A festival celebrating pride in being disabled is taking place in Birmingham today for the first time.

Hosted by Birmingham City University (BCU), it will bring together disabled talent in live performances, sports and interactive games such as wheelchair basketball and blind football.

The free event will take place at BCU’s Curzon Building from 12pm to 4pm.

Vice Chancellor Professor David Mba said: “Our university is renowned for being diverse and inclusive. This is demonstrated by the recent signing of the Disability Student Pledge, which will support our ongoing efforts to improve the experiences of students with disabilities and ensure we remove any barriers they face.

“The festival provides a fantastic opportunity to come together and celebrate the contributions of our disability community.”

Its partners include Ways for Wellbeing UK CIC, BMe College, SCCB, Arts Therapies UK, Augmented Lifestyle CIC and the Sakeenah Foundation.

One of the organizers and director of Ways for Wellbeing UK CIC, Nabila Gardner, believes that the festival will motivate people with disabilities to feel proud of their identity.

“We know what it’s like not to be seen and recognized for our work.

“We all have different ways of being included in our world and we’re proud to do things differently.” she added.
