Ryan Lowe issues Sam Greenwood verdict as Leeds youngster joins Preston North End on loan

Ryan Lowe has issued his verdict on Sam Greenwood after Preston North End completed a deal to sign the Leeds United youngster on an initial loan move.

It was not that surprising to see Sam Greenwood leave Elland Road in the early stages of the summer transfer window, with the 22-year-old spending last year with Middlesbrough.

Middlesbrough decided not to take up the option to keep Greenwood, but that has presented an opportunity to Preston North End, who have signed the versatile attacking midfielder for the campaign. As reported by the Lancashire Post, Preston have an option to sign Greenwood permanently.

And following the announcement that he has moved to Deepdale, Greenwood has been praised by Preston boss Ryan Lowe.

“I’m really pleased with the signing of Sam. He’s a great footballer with quality with his left and right foot, and his set pieces are excellent too,” he said.

“I actually spent a bit of time with Sam last summer when he was training abroad and I saw what he was capable of.

“We tried to sort something then but we couldn’t quite get it done and he ended up going to Middlesbrough.

“We feel he has a big part to play and we’re really pleased to have him with us for the season.”

A good move for Leeds youngster

Greenwood showed some real promise in the early stages of his time at the Riverside Stadium, having scored five times for Michael Carrick’s men by mid-December. However, he faded during the second-half of the season, and so, it was not that much of a shock when Boro decided against a permanent deal.

With that, it was always hard to see Greenwood forcing his way into Daniel Farke’s plans. He can play in a couple of positions, and obviously has an outstanding set-piece delivery. It is also terrifying to think that Greenwood was the last central midfielder to score a league goal for Leeds before Ilia Gruev’s play-off semi-final strike.

Once again, an option to buy acts as an indication that Greenwood will not be playing for Leeds again. If he plays well enough to make his parent club sit up and take notice, Preston will surely make sure that he stays beyond this coming season.
