Discover the wonders of nature at the Wetlands Centre, just outside Bristol

A wetland reserve between Bristol and Gloucester offers a fun family day out without the bird watching and wildlife safaris. Slimbridge Wetland Centre, located on the eastern estuary of the River Severn, hosts a range of events and activities perfect for children interested in the natural world.

For avid wildlife watchers, now is a great time to head to the reserve. A number of birds have recently been seen forming post-breeding flocks, including Green Warblers, Lapwing, Teal and Curlew.

There are 13 hides on site, giving you the best vantage points to spot the various different species seen in the reserve throughout the year. The Estuary Tower Hide is complete with an elevator and the heated Peng Observatory hosts commented streams around 4pm every day.

If you’re feeling adventurous, take a trip on the Canoe Safari trail. Canoes cost £10 to hire and can hold three people, or if you’re paddling alone, test your skills in an old coracle boat.

The Summer Walkway is open until the end of summer where you can explore the sights and inhabitants of the Severn Estuary, including amphibians, dragonflies and butterflies. It’s wheelchair accessible and kids can learn through fact-finding missions and fun challenges in the free ‘Wetlands Heroes’ app as they explore the centre.

Kids can also visit the Tundra Hut, where they can dress up as arctic explorers. They can become a true bird watcher and use binoculars and telescopes to identify different species.

Slimbridge is conveniently located close to the M5 between Bristol and Gloucester. The reserve has a large, free car park with six charging points for electric vehicles.
