The Aston Villa players who were able to say goodbye to Villa Park on Monday

It could be another game to remember on Monday when Aston Villa host Liverpool with a chance to secure Champions League qualification.

Unai Emery’s side are just one win away from confirming their place in the top four ahead of Tottenham. Even though Villa lost to Liverpool on Monday night, Spurs will not be able to catch them if they lose to Manchester City the following day.

Villa are already guaranteed a top-five finish, meaning they will enter next season’s Europa League if they fail to overtake fourth-placed Spurs. Regardless of which competition Villa qualify for, the club’s president of football operations, Monchi, has a big task to strengthen Emery’s first-team squad while raising money through player sales.

Profit and sustainability rules have put pressure on most Premier League clubs and while Champions League revenue will go some way to helping Villa comply, some of the club’s big earners could be moved to save money and to reduce the wage bill.

In January, Villa signed four players to not only reduce the average age of the squad, but also to add more options to Emery for minimal cost. Morgan Rogers made a brilliant impact after coming on for Jacob Ramsey, while Kosta Nedeljkovic and Lino Sousa will be looking to impress in pre-season. January arrival Joe Gauci is currently the third ‘keeper.

There will be interest in Villa’s players this summer after a number of strong individual campaigns, but only huge bids will be entertained for some of the club’s prized assets, including Ollie Watkins. Douglas Luiz could attract interest again this summer, with Arsenal and Barcelona just two clubs known to be tracking him.
