Three by-elections set for Ealing after ward councilors become MPs – EALING.NEWS – Voice of Ealing 7 Cities

Three wards of Ealing Council could hold by-elections by the end of the year after councilors Callum Anderson, Deirdre Costigan and Gregory Stafford were elected MPs at the recent general election (4th July 2024).

Callum Anderson, a South Acton councilor, won Buckingham & Bletchley, while Northolt Mandeville, Labor councilor and Ealing Council deputy leader Deirdre Costigan won Ealing Southall.

Conservative Gregory Stafford, who represents the Hanger Hill ward, won Farnham & Bordon.

It was third time lucky to become an MP for Mr Anderson. In the 2019 general election, he stood for Labor in South West Bedfordshire, where he came second, while in 2022 he was selected as the Labor candidate for Stevenage, but was not shortlisted.

While there is nothing stopping a councilor from keeping their ward seat and being an MP at the same time, many will quit to focus on their parliamentary careers.

In the December 2019 general election, Councilor Stafford’s brother Alexander Stafford became Conservative MP for Rother Valley and remained as Ealing Broadway councilor until 1 April 2020, while fellow Conservative Joy Morrissey became MP for Beaconsfield and remained as Hanger councilor Hill until April 1, 2020.
