COUDERSPORT — The Sheffield Wolverines competed in their final opportunity to qualify individuals for the District 9 championships at the Northern Tier League Championships weekend in Coudersport.

“Their determination and effort is as bright as the northern lights that were on display over the weekend,” said Jason Snell, Sheffield’s head coach.

The Wolverines boys finished second in team points behind Port Allegany and 15 points ahead of regular season champion Coudersport.

The Sheffield girls also had a strong day with numerous podium finishes.

For the Sheffield girls team, the podium finishes started with the 3,200m relay team of Madison Snell, Katie Finch, Chloe Robinson and Kayle Bell taking fourth. The 400-meter relay team continued its march to the podium with a fifth-place finish by Sarah Hoffman, Bell, Finch and Snell.

Hoffman went straight from his early relay success to the hurdles, where he posted a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (18.10) and a fourth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles (54.51). Hoffman, though only a junior, later added a third-place finish in the 200 meters with a personal best time of 29.78 seconds. Snell continued her strong freshman campaign with a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.20.

In girls field events, Emily Foster placed second in the high jump (4-11) and took fifth in the shot put (29-8.5). Emma Roell placed third in the discus (89-10). Emily Davidson rounded out the girls standings by placing sixth in the javelin with a throw of 84 feet, 1 inch.

The lone Northern Tier League boys champion was Dylan Hardwick in the 800m. Not only did Hardwick win, he did it in a career-best time of 2:08.59.

“It was such an exciting race to watch” Snell said. “Just a cool moment to see a young man achieve one of the goals he set for himself at the beginning of the season.”

Hardwick was also on the podium for the relay events as Sheffield finished second in all three. Hardwick was joined by Christopher Joblon, Alex Eaton and Chase Kyler in the 3,200-meter relay; and Colby Barr, Joblon and Austin Fiscus in the 1,600-meter relay; while Alex Marfink, Chase Fetzek, Isaac Hammerbeck and Barr won the 400-meter relay. Barr also placed third in the 100 meters (12.3) and 400 meters (57.15).

The Wolverines also did well in the steeplechase events. Marfink placed second (19.76), Hammerbeck third (20.31) and Fetzek fourth (20.33) in the 110-meter hurdles. Hammerbeck and Fetzek also placed second and third, respectively, in the 300-meter hurdles.

First-year track competitor Aamond Bowman placed in all three jumping events. He finished sixth in the long jump (17-3), fifth in the triple jump (37-6) and fifth in the high jump (5-0).

Completing the visitors’ podium was javelin thrower Wyatt Newark, who placed fourth at 113 feet.

“Just a rewarding night for our program,” Snell said. “There is nothing better than seeing these athletes’ goals come true. We hope this has set us up perfectly for the district competition. Just a proud night to be a Wolverine.”

Sheffield has some much-needed time to prepare for the District 9 championship meet, which is Saturday at Brookville High School starting at 1 p.m.
