The cleaning expert shares a simple trick to soften hard and “crispy” towels.

Towels can easily become hard and crunchy over time if not washed properly, but there is a simple way to restore towels to make them soft again. It may seem obvious to wash your towels with fabric softener, but it’s a common mistake many people make because the fabric softener will build up in the towels and weigh down the fabric, making them scratchy over time.

Lynsey Crombie, Britain’s most popular cleaning expert, also known as the Queen of Cleaning, said that towels should be washed differently from the rest of your laundry, reports the Express. She said: “Always wash your towels separately and without other items of clothing. Choose a gentle laundry detergent without additives, as this will stop fading and protect the fibers.

“My personal choice is SURF laundry detergents in liquid form. For fluffiness, adding a teaspoon of baking soda to your laundry detergent drawer can help bring them back to life, and for strong odors, add a capful of white wine vinegar.”

It may seem unusual, but vinegar is one of the best products for restoring towels because it is slightly acidic, which can dissolve fabric softener trapped in the towel fabric. The acidity of the vinegar also helps to relax the fabric fibers, which will help restore them and make them naturally softer to the touch.

Baking soda is alkaline, which means it can break down any remaining residue that vinegar can’t dissolve. All you have to do is put towels in the washing machine and add about 230ml of white vinegar and 120g of baking soda to a detergent drawer.

Put the towels on a regular hot wash without using detergent, and the towels should come out of the washer fluffy again. In the future, make sure you wash your towels regularly without conditioner and they should stay naturally soft.

Lynsey said: “Wash your towels at least once a week. But if you’re a clean freak like me – three to four times a week.”
