‘Just a stopgap’: Sky Sports pundits react to Brad Arthur signing from Leeds Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos avoided a devastating defeat at London Broncos today, which could keep their fight for a Super League play-off place alive.

They were taken into extra time from the golden point, where Brodie Croft scored the winning kick. However, the fans were furious with the performance and the team was certainly lucky to face a team that made so many mistakes: especially late on.

It was reminiscent of the defeat to Hull FC which was ultimately former head coach Rohan Smith’s last game in charge at Headingley.

Today was another poor performance at home against a team that has lost its last two games by a combined 82 points and lost 46-8 just two months ago against the Rhinos under Smith.

This means the news that Brad Arthur is set to join the club as head coach until the end of the season could have come with perfect timing, as Sky pundits noted in the build-up to Catalans Dragons v Hull KR.

Almost immediately after the game ended, the team – consisting of Brian Carney, Jon Wilkin and Sam Tomkins – discussed the news.

Sam Tomkins said: “Yes, I think they clearly need someone to come in. I’m sure he’ll have some problems after watching today’s show.

“There’s not much time left for Leeds to turn their form around, so someone coming in as soon as possible I think has to be a priority.”

Jon Wilkin agreed, adding: “The problem is if you fire your coach mid-season… coaches’ contracts don’t end until November, so you’re already in a market of people looking for work and there are not that many.

“I know we’re talking about the same names. It’s Demetriou (former head coach of the South Sydney Rabbitohs), it’s Brad Arthur, all these names are twisted.

“It’s a problem that Leeds would have foreseen, so Brad Arthur might just be a no-go until they get that man in charge for next year.”

That man could turn out to be Paul Rowley if rumors are to be believed, but as he is contracted to Salford Red Devils until 2025, they will have to be the winners of a fight if they are to land him.
