Leeds Rhinos: Ian Blease breaks silence on Brad Arthur reports

Leeds Rhinos sporting director Ian Blease has commented on reports that Brad Arthur is set to become Leeds Rhinos head coach until the end of the season.

The Rhinos claimed a dramatic golden point against London Broncos today but their performance was labeled “shambolic”.

Chev Walker, the club’s caretaker manager, was remarkably and surprisingly joined by Ian Blease in the post-match press conference.

Reports came in this morning suggesting that Brad Arthur was set to join the club as Rohan Smith’s successor,

Arthur was head coach for a decade at Parramatta and never took on the role anywhere else.

His sacking came in May as the Eels had just three wins all season and were 14th in the table.

Blease was asked about the reports and replied: “The purpose of being here is for some clarity on that.

“I have three phases in mind.

“Phase one was meeting, interviewing and talking to the candidates who applied – which has gone quite well in the last week or two.

“Stage two now sets out some options that we can look at, but nothing official has been done yet, so it will continue next week now.

“Obviously, it’s a very important decision for us as a club. We want to make sure we get it right, so there are still thoughts that we need to discuss and do.

We have Rob’s funeral tomorrow so nothing will be announced by the club until next week.”

Asked if the club had “advanced discussions” with Arthur, Blease replied:

“He and a number of candidates were discussed and there were interviews last week by me, so I will make those choices next week.”

Perhaps giving some credence to reports linking him with only joining until the end of the year, asked if that would be the case, Blease replied: “That’s an option. It’s one of our options.”
