Another Greater Manchester MP has been added to Sir Kier Starmer’s No.10

Scores of Greater Manchester MPs have made it into the new Labor cabinet named by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer – and another has been appointed as Prime Minister.

As he held his first meeting today (July 6), Sir Keir was flanked by his deputy and Secretary of State for Equalization, Housing and Communities, Angela Rayner. The Deputy Prime Minister and MP for Ashton-under-Lyne is now the most powerful woman in the country.

Culture Secretary and Wigan MP Lisa Nandy and Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall were pictured arriving at Number 10. Yesterday (5 July) Jonathan Reynolds, MP for Stalybridge and Hyde, was also appointed Business Secretary and trade and president of the Ministry of Trade. He too held the same role in the shadow cabinet.

Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell, leader of the House of Commons, told reporters there was “a lot to do”.

Tonight, Number 10 Downing Street confirmed that Jim McMahon, MP for Oldham, will join the Deputy Prime Minister in his department. Mr McMahon, who previously held the role of Shadow Environment Secretary in 2022, has been appointed Minister of State for Leveling, Housing and Communities.

Sir Keir opened his first cabinet meeting with a rallying cry, telling the assembled ministers: “We have an enormous amount of work, so now we get on with our work.”

He told his cabinet: “Look colleagues, it’s absolutely fantastic to welcome you to the Cabinet, our first meeting.
