I went to Costco, it was chaos and everyone seemed to want the same thing

There are many reasons why shoppers head to Costco, and it seemed like they all decided to go there at once on my recent trip to the Trafford store.

Whether it’s the giant muffins or the five-liter bottles of fabric conditioner, there are certain favorites that keep customers coming back time and time again.

I was there mainly for two things last Sunday – its massive packets of Kirkland toilet rolls and bottles of spring water.

I never knew they were out of stock, but annoyingly they were out of both.

That’s probably why shoppers were practically pouncing on a Costco worker in the back of the store who was hawking packages of discounted Andrex toilet rolls before he had a chance to stock his shelf.

The last time I saw something like this was when the Prime drink hit stores and had people queuing up the aisle.

I was having flashbacks to the Covid days when the loo roll became its own currency. I didn’t even know the price at this point, but I figured if people were that desperate to get their hands on it, it was probably worth getting something.

It turned out that three packs of 16 rolls were on offer for £17.99 (incl. VAT), with just 37 per roll, a massive saving on supermarket prices.

Just a 16-pack of the same toilet rolls costs £11.50 at Tesco or Asda, so that would be £34.50 for the three packs, almost double the Costco price.

I bought some sparkling water instead of still water which was another bargain at £5.87 for 40 500ml bottles, or just 15p a bottle.

And I picked up a pack of summer fruit flavored waters which cost £6.47 for 24 bottles or 27 each. This is another big savings compared to what you pay elsewhere. Even at Aldi, four-packs of flavored waters cost £1.45, which is 36p a bottle, and at B&M, Essence flavored waters are 45p each.

It may have been absolute chaos and I’m not sure I’ll be going back to Costco on a Sunday in a hurry, but it’s always a trip worth making for savings like this.

The Andrex offer has now ended, but Costco, which also has branches in Oldham and Haydock, has regular Hot Buy offers for members.

Costco membership costs £33.60 per year. A list of professions from which current or retired employees can apply is listed here and members can add a spouse for free or get an additional card for £14 plus VAT. You can also get an online-only shopping membership for £15.
