Warning for British tourists visiting Italy, Spain, Greece as Foreign Office says ‘attacks are likely’

The Foreign Office has issued new travel warnings for Britons planning to visit Greece, Italy and Spain. The alerts for these popular European holiday destinations come as countries face a heatwave with rising temperatures.

In Greece, the Foreign Office warned of potential terrorist plots, urging British tourists to be vigilant about issues “involving explosives and automatic weapons against Greek institutions, shopping centres, banks, press offices, diplomatic headquarters and the police”. reports Birmingham Live.

“Currently, there is an increased risk of such protests, especially in central Athens,” officials said. It also warned that terrorists are “likely to try to carry out attacks in Spain”, with a high threat level for a global terrorist attack. “Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals,” the British government website warns.

Tourists are advised to “Be aware of your surroundings, keep abreast of local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities”. The Foreign Office said: “Demonstrations, political gatherings or marches may take place” in the country “with little or no warning, particularly in cities”, and advised visitors to follow the advice of police and local authorities.

“While most demonstrations are peaceful, there is a risk of unrest or violence,” the warning added. “If you are near areas where demonstrations are taking place, be aware of what is happening around you and move away if there are signs of disturbance.”

“’Highway pirates’ target foreign-registered cars and hire cars, especially those pulling caravans. They can flag you down, claiming there’s something wrong with your car or that you’ve damaged theirs,” the Foreign Office added. “If you decide to stop to check the condition of a vehicle, stop in a public area with lights, such as a service station. Be wary of anyone who offers help.”

“Thieves are also targeting coastal areas and towns as well as motorway service stations,” it warned on its travel advice page for Italy. “Avoid leaving luggage in the vehicle – even out of sight in the trunk – for any length of time. Thieves can use a variety of methods to distract you or encourage you to stop your car, including asking for help or directions or showing a fictitious fault with your car,” the warning adds.
