Leeds United must consider cashing in on ‘poor fit’ Farke signing if foreign offer is worthwhile – View

Leeds United striker Joel Piroe is reportedly subject to interest from abroad this summer and the club could consider letting him leave.

Leeds have plenty to be getting on with this summer as they gear up for a second season in the Championship, and outgoings have dictated their moves so far.

Joe Rodon is the first arrival, but he came by virtue of Archie Gray leaving the club for £40million, and more outgoings loom.

Joel Piroe subject to foreign interest, Leeds could sell the striker

A report from the Daily Mail earlier this week shared that alongside Gray’s move to Tottenham, the club could part ways with a few more first team players.

Named in that list was striker Joel Piroe, as they wrote:

“Leeds maintained they did not need to sell for profit and sustainability rules (PSR) after offloading Marc Roca to Real Betis and Charle Cresswell to Toulouse but they have to trim their budget ahead of next season.

“Rennes want Glen Kamara also while they are expected to sell Junior Firpo and either Patrick Bamford or Joel Piroe amid interest from abroad.”

It remains to be seen if those clubs will front up that interest from abroad, but the Whites may have a decision to make on the Dutchman just 11 months on from his £10.5 million arrival from Swansea City.

If offers are right, Leeds should consider selling Piroe

What Piroe brings is a unique trait that hasn’t been seen often at Elland Road in recent years, and that’s the ability to just score goals first and foremost.

He bagged 22 and 19 in his two seasons at Swansea under Russell Martin, then came to a Leeds side where he was shoehorned into roles that didn’t suit his style, but still managed 14 in the league with a further three assists – and could would have had more if he was the designated penalty taker.

However, there is a big elephant in the room with regards to the fact that he’s simply a poor fit for how Farke wants Leeds to play.

He’s intelligent enough to know he’s not a gifted ball-carrier like most of Leeds’ other attackers and shifts the ball quicker than others, but he does stick out in that sense, not able to cover ground as well with possession or when Leeds are counter – pressing either.

Piroe is unfortunately stuck between two roles at Leeds, not quite the number nine Farke wants with his back to goal or stretching the opposition defence, nor is he the deep-lying forward that can dictate from an attacking midfield position.

Should the club get an offer that allows them to break even or make a profit, it has to be considered so that the German can source a replacement that better suits the setup.
