College sets them up, knocks them down for FoodLocker (video)

Over the past two academic years, the college says about 6,000 students have accessed Georgian FoodLocker, nearly half of whom are repeat users.

A line of 450 cereal boxes toppled like giant dominoes through the halls of Georgian College’s Barrie campus as a fundraiser for Georgian FoodLocker, a campus emergency food bank for students.

Growler, the college’s grizzly bear mascot, knocked over the first cereal box to start the domino game, which ran nearly 100 meters from the Georgian College Students’ Lounge (GCSA) to the library and spiraled down the down a grand staircase.

Cereals will now be donated to students in need. Over the past two academic years, approximately 6,000 students have accessed Georgian FoodLocker, nearly half of whom are repeat users.

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and we wanted to support our students to help them start their days off right so they can focus on their studies and have an unparalleled experience at Georgian,” said Jenni Thompson, media relations. college officer and a lead organizer.

A group of employees in Georgian’s marketing, communications and recruiting and conference and event services department were inspired to start this cereal domino fundraiser after seeing an online video of an elementary school doing something similar.

All grain was donated by Georgian employees and their friends and family.

GCSA members, who operate the Georgian FoodLocker program on all seven campuses, organized the cereal set-up.
