Man jailed after £500 worth of heroin found in backpack – South London News

A 38-year-old man has been jailed for more than five years after being caught carrying heroin and cannabis by British Transport Police (BTP).

Dexter Sharpe, of Timsbury Walk, Wandsworth, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply Class A drugs and possession of cannabis at Inner London Crown Court on June 26. He was sentenced to five years and six months in prison.

The court heard how on July 26, 2022, Sharpe was stopped by officers and detained for a search after he was caught smoking a joint outside Clapham Junction station.

He was found to be carrying a mobile phone, more than £2,000 in cash and 25 sachets of heroin – the equivalent of £500 – in his rucksack.

He was arrested and while in custody, cannabis was also found among his possessions.

During his interview with police, Sharpe claimed the phone, cash and heroin did not belong to him, but refused to explain why he was carrying them.

Investigating officer DC Emma Martin said: “Sharpe’s sentence reflects the seriousness of his crime and how serious the courts consider such an offence.

“Drugs are a scourge on communities and this is yet another example of our intervention to remove more drugs that were destined for the streets.

“Anyone involved in transporting drugs on the rail network should be careful – we have eyes everywhere – you will be caught and face the consequences.”
